There is no guaranteed way to prevent breakouts of pimples on your chin or anywhere else. However, learning to care for this acne-prone area can reduce the frequency of breakouts, as well as their duration and severity.

Acne breakouts often occur because of changes you’ve made to your daily routine. Maybe you’ve started using a different laundry detergent, shampoo, face cream or soap. These are often the biggest culprits of an acne breakout.

If you want to keep your skin clear and radiant, avoid breakouts by following these 10 simple tips:

1. Choose Acne-Friendly Makeup

The makeup you use (and how much you use) has a big impact on the health of your skin. If you’re prone to breakouts, look for products that say “non-comedogenic” on the label. This means that the product is specifically designed not to clog your pores. Clogged pores are one of the leading causes of breakouts.

2. Change Your Pillow Case Weekly

Forget the $50 bottle of acne cream you’ve been purchasing every month, changing your pillow case is a proven method for preventing breakouts. All of the sweat, dirt and makeup from your face is seeping into your pillow every night. If you don’t wash your pillow cases regularly you’re basically planting your face on a pillow of sweat and dirt for 8 hours. Washing your cases will give your face the fresh rest it needs at the end of the day.

3. Moisturize

If you’ve turned to acne products to control your outbreaks (which most of you probably have), the importance of moisturizing becomes a key component in keeping your breakouts at bay. Most acne products contain ingredients that dry out the skin, thus, moisturizing immediately after is critical. Make sure you hydrate your skin with water before applying the moisturizer.

4. Review Your Shampoo

Polishing up your skincare routine doesn't need to involve spending more time at the sink or money at the store. Before we get to the good stuff, let's quickly make sure you understand why you do what you do to your face. By understanding what each step of your skincare routine is trying to achieve, you'll understand how just slightly improving the step will make a big impact on your regimen's results. After all, we want to get the most out of those 5 minutes at the sink each morning and night, right?

Here's the nitty-gritty:
1. Cleansing is doing just that; it's rinsing and washing the day's makeup, oil, dead skin and grit off your face. If left on your skin overnight, it would clog your pores and create build-up on the skin's surface forming a rough texture, dullness and potentially breakouts. Cleansing is the first step in getting your skin prepared to receive your treatment serums.
2. Toning is important because it helps restore your skin's pH balance and also removes any cleanser residue, remaining makeup, dead skin cells, oil and dirt. Think of it as an extension of cleansing; again, you're preparing your skin to accept the next steps of your routine.
3. Applying treatment serums are critical to achieving any goals you may have with your skin (think: aging gracefully, lightening hyperpigmentation, clearing acne, calming rosacea, etc.). Serums are loaded with active ingredients and formulated in a way that they can be carried into the skin to go to work. 
4. Moisturizing replenishes moisture that's been lost and also seals in the moisture that's already in your skin. Adding moisture is key for leaving your skin feeling soft and looking hydrated.

And on to the good stuff:
1. Cleansing: Use warm, never hot, water while cleansing. Hot water can dry out your skin. Also, be careful not to use too much water with your cleanser, it dilutes your cleanser making the active ingredients less effective. What I suggest is to either use a makeup remover to remove your makeup first or splash the majority of your makeup off just using water. Once the water is running fairly clear, grab about a nickel sized amount of your cleanser in your already moistened hands. Create a lather (if your cleanser lathers) and apply it directly to your dampened face. Move the cleanser around for at least one minute in gentle circle motions. By letting your cleanser sit on your face for at least a minute, it gives the active ingredients in the cleanser time to work their magic. Otherwise, you're just rinsing the money you spent on the cleanser down the drain.

Another cleansing improvement you can make that won't affect your long term budget, but will cost a bit more upfront, is to use an active cleanser in the P.M. (this will prepare your skin more effectively for your next skincare steps) and a gentle cleanser in the A.M. (this will leave your acid mantle -- your skin's natural barrier against environmental elements -- in place to help protect you during the day).

2. Toning: Use cotton pads or gauze, as opposed to cotton balls, with your toner. Cotton pads remove remaining dead skin, dirt and oil, and this better prepares your skin for your treatment serums. Using cotton pads or gauze also prevents excess product usage, thereby saving you money every time!

3. Applying Treatment Serums: To get the most out of your treatment serums, make sure you're using them correctly. Apply your anti-oxidant serums in the A.M. to protect your skin during the day and then apply your exfoliating and peptide-rich serums in the P.M. to nourish and renew your skin overnight. Also, always remember to apply treatment serums them in order of thinnest consistency, first, to thickest, last. If you do it this way, you'll be sure to get the best results. Otherwise, the thicker serums will block the thinner serums from penetrating your skin -- which would just be waste of your hard earned cash.

4. Moisturizing: Apply your moisturizer using upward, lifting motions. This will help fight the effects of gravity. Additionally, to make your moisturizer more effective, let it sit for a few minutes prior to applying makeup so that it can fully penetrate. Don't be afraid to use your moisturizer with SPF both morning and night if you only have one. Another suggestion to improve the health of your skin, is to switch out your daily body lotion with one that contains SPF when it runs out. By doing this, you're sure to be protected daily from sun exposure on your body as well as your face.

Overall: To ensure you keep your neck and décolleté looking as good as your smiling mug, always start at your forehead and work downward all the way to your neck and then décolleté. No one wants a wrinkly, aged neck and décolleté.

Don't Neglect your Skin

Did you know that most skin aging occurs during the summer? So consistent application of sun protection, regular professional facials, and a good home skin care routine are your best defenses against fun in the sun...and heat.

Wearing Sunscreen every day will Significantly cut back on Accumulative Sun Damage

Recent information from the UCLA skin research department indicates that 78% of all the sun damage incurred in a lifetime is from incidental exposure! You may say "I'm not out at all during the day" but just walking to your car, and even driving in your car will expose you to unnecessary sun damage. Windshields do nothing to protect you from UV rays! Wear a moisturizer that contains a sun block with a minimum of SPF #15. Apply it in the morning so you'll be covered all day!

It's not about the SPF Number, it's how often and how much you re-apply your Sunscreen

People are always asking me which SPF number should they use. The truth is, an SPF 30 only offers 4% more protection than an SPF 15. You would have thought it was double the protection, right? As you get up in the higher numbers (SPF 45, 50, 70 +) that percentage comes down, but you're also exposing your skin to more chemicals which might result in a negative reaction on the skin. The key to protecting your skin in the sun is to re-apply your sunscreen generously at least every two hours. A little dab won't do ya...you need to slather it on.

For those who suffer from Back Breakouts, avoid Hair Conditioner containing Panthenol

If back breakouts trouble you, it could be an ingredient in your hair conditioner that's causing the problem. Panthenol, well-known for its benefit for strengthening the hair, may be a potential pore-clogger. Why the back? Simply because when you rinse out hair conditioner, a residue of the product stays on your back. Use hair products that do not contain Panthenol, exfoliate your back with a mild cleansing gel and exfoliating cloth three times a week and apply an anti-bacterial lotion and your back will be clear for summer.

To Produce Less Oil on the Face, never Wash with a Bar of Soap

One of the biggest complaints we hear during the summer is, "My skin gets so oily!" The binders that hold a bar of soap together are in an alkaline base (high pH balance), which will strip all the water and natural oils out of the skin, causing the surface of the skin to dehydrate. Your skin cells need to stay moist in order to be healthy, and without water, your skin will be producing more oil to compensate for the lack of water which is that last thing you want your skin to do in the heat of the summer! Using soap can also cause more break outs as the dehydrated cells being caused from the drying soap can cause a layer of dry skin cell buildup which can trap oil and keep them clogged in the pores.

Avoid Dairy Products if your Skin is Prone to Break Outs

With the heat and humidity in the summer, break outs are a real concern for a lot of people. And we've all heard that greasy foods and chocolate cause breakouts. In our experience, when breakouts are cyst-like in the chin and jawline area, most often this is related to excessive dairy products in your diet. Try cutting out cheese, milk, ice cream, and frozen yogurt, and watch your skin clear up! There are many other ways to get calcium in your diet; broccoli, asparagus and orange juice.

When Soothing a Sunburn, avoid applying Lotion. Instead use Cold Yogurt

Okay. So you thought you had on plenty of sunscreen and the next thing you know, you got fried. A common misconception about soothing a sunburn is that you should keep re-applying lotion (especially aloe vera-based lotion) to keep the skin moist. But layering lotion on sunburned skin traps heat, keeping the skin red longer. Skin must breathe to let out heat. Cold plain yogurt applied to the skin works as an anti-inflammatory and heat remover. Apply, let dry for 15 minutes, and rinse. Repeat every hour.

Use Hand Cream that contains Sunscreen

Did you know that the majority of aging that occurs on the hands (sun spots and wrinkles) is attributable to driving in the car with your hands on the steering wheel? Make sure to use a hand cream with an SPF of at least #15 every day.

For Soothing Sensitive Skin, keep your products in the Refrigerator

For skins that have redness or rosacea-like symptoms, the constant heat in the summer can keep skin looking red and irritated. Keep your products in the refrigerator so that when you use them, they not only feel refreshing, but the cold acts as a vaso-constrictor to reduce the dilation of the cappillaries and reduces visible redness.

Load up with Antioxidants, both Topically and Internally

Research continues to indicate that antioxidants, when used topically in skin care serums and moisturizers and taken internally by eating spinach, tomatoes, berries and sweet potatoes, can provide your skin and body with the defense it needs to fight off damaging free radicals which increase aging. One of the main ways we get these damaging free radicals is through sunlight - even while wearing a sunscreen! Vitamin C is a popular ingredient that will provide your skin with age-fighting antioxidant protection.

Don't rely only on your Sunscreen

Sunscreens wear off, sweat off, and wash off, so reapply every hour if you are out in the sun. Also, wear a hat, sunglasses, and protective clothing to guard your skin against sun damage. If you want to look young, avoid the sun! No amount of sun exposure is damage-free. A little sun means a little damage, and a lot of sun means a lot of damage. And suntan beds are the worst!

Put the Brakes on Brown Spots with a Skin Lightener

For skins prone to hyperpigmentation and discoloration (brown spots), the summer sun can really exacerbate this condition. But did you know that it is not only the sun that causes these spots to come out during the summer, but the heat from UV rays? So even if you are absolutely diligent about re-applying sun protection and wearing a hat when outdoors, your melanin activity can still be stimulated resulting in an increase of brown spots. If you are prone to hyperpigmentation, you must use a skin lightener every day to suppress the melanin activity to prevent pigmentation from getting worse during the hot summer months.

Blot, Blot, Blot

Although there is no miracle product to control the extra oil that you get during the summer months, there are ways to keep that shine under control. Oil blotting papers are great to use during the day to actually remove the oils off the skin to give you the feel of freshly washed skin. In a pinch? The type of paper used for toilet seat covers in public restrooms is similar to expensive oil blotting papers.Tear off a piece of this and press firmly on the skin. Voila!

How to wash your makeup brushes: Fill a glass with warm water and 1 tablespoon of gentle shampoo or gel cleanser. Swish brushes in the glass creating a lather. Rinse well and use a comb to de-tangle the bristles and get them back in their original shape. Let dry in an upright glass out in the sun. The sunlight destroys bacteria and helps to dry your brushes faster.
